Several poppy flowers occupy the entire composition, their petals bright red and orange spread out in large gestural curves. The heart of each flower darkens to a deep anthracite hue, punctuated by touches of purple that accentuate the contrast. The technique used, applied with a spatula, creates a thick relief where the paint forms real sculpted impasto. The background, treated in a range of gold, beige and off-white, reveals streaks and spontaneous splashes. A few black buds stand on thin stems, bringing a graphic counterpoint to the floral profusion. The light seems to come from the surface of the canvas itself, catching each streak of paint. The whole exudes a raw energy, between vegetal realism and pictorial abstraction.
