The suspended moment when the foot touches the ball, when the whole body arches backwards: this rugby painting captures the pure energy of a sporting gesture. The golden and ochre tones bathe the scene in an almost mythical light, like a memory frozen forever.
The composition is organized around a dark silhouette in full action, leg extended towards the sky after kicking the ball. The cream and slightly textured background recalls ancient paper, reinforcing the artisanal aspect of the watercolor technique. Golden splashes dot the bottom of the image, evoking both the dirt ground and a warm end-of-day light. The ball, suspended in mid-air in a dark brown hue, creates a strong focal point that guides the eye to the top of the canvas. The contours of the player remain deliberately blurred and pictorial, playing on gradients of brown and black which give relief to the movement. The whole conveys an impression of speed and precarious balance, typical of sporting scenes captured at the decisive moment. This work accurately translates the physical tension and elegance of the rugby gesture.
