ORCA PAINTINGS
Two paintings, one gaze that has to travel from one to the other without a hitch. One centimeter too many or too few, and the wall tells a story of hesitation rather than composition.
It comes down to measurements, simple reference points, and a rule that people almost always apply too quickly.
The direct answerFor a harmonious orca and whale diptych, leave a horizontal gap of 5 to 10 cm between the two canvases, align them at the same height (the center of the pair at about 1.50 m from the floor), and choose two formats from the same range to keep visual coherence. The essentials lie in the precision of the hanging, not just in the choice of images.- Ideal gap between the two paintings: 5 to 10 cm, never more than 15 cm unless the wall is large
- Together, the two canvases cover 60 to 75% of the width of the wall or the sofa
Why the orca and whale diptych works visually
Contrast does all the work. A black and white orca, graphic and almost sculptural, placed beside a blue whale with softer volumes: the wall expresses two different tempos of the ocean, raw power and majestic slowness.
What holds the ensemble together is less the resemblance between the two works than their dialogue. The same dominant palette (black, navy blue, sometimes touches of gold), the same presentation format, but different animal postures. The eye circulates, compares, and returns. That is exactly the effect sought.
Before thinking about hanging, you must therefore choose canvases that respond to each other.
The spacing rules between the two canvases
The most reliable rule in wall decoration remains the 5 to 10 cm gap between the edges of the two works: close enough for the eye to read them as a set, wide enough for each canvas to breathe.
Horizontal spacing according to the width of the wall
On a wall 2 to 2.5 m wide, a gap of 5 to 8 cm almost always works. Beyond 3 m of wall, you can go up to 10-15 cm without breaking the effect of a pair, provided the two paintings remain of comparable size.
Vertical alignment: same height or staggered effect
The two top edges and the two bottom edges face each other, creating a clean horizontal line that structures the wall.
A slight vertical offset (10 to 15 cm) can work if you want a more dynamic effect, like a suspended wave. But it is a riskier choice, reserved for walls already strongly structured otherwise (low sideboard, shelf, molding).
Choosing the ideal height according to the room
Living room and dining room
Above a sofa, the bottom of the two paintings is generally placed 20-25 cm above the backrest.
In a dining room, aim for the wall behind the buffet or console, following the same logic of proportion relative to the furniture.
Bedroom and hallway
In a bedroom, above the headboard, the 1.50 m reference at the center remains valid, but you can lower it slightly if the bed is low, to keep an intimate visual relationship with the furniture.
In a hallway, where one looks at the wall while passing rather than sitting, raise the center to 1.55-1.60 m: the eye naturally reaches it while walking.

Staging the diptych: concrete examples
A living room with a sofa 220 cm wide comfortably accommodates two L formats (120x70 cm) side by side with an 8 cm gap: the set covers about 248 cm, in the right proportion.
If you are torn between two different marine animals to compose your pair, the article on wall staging with megalodon and blue whale details other species combinations to vary the theme while keeping the same compositional logic.
Common mistakes to avoid with a wall diptych
Failures almost always come back to the same three causes.
- Canvases too close or too far apart : less than 3 cm, the set looks cramped; more than 20 cm without a wall large enough, the pair dissolves into two independent pieces.
- Disproportionate sizes : pairing an L format with a 3XL format breaks the visual balance, unless a very strong and deliberate aesthetic choice is intended.
- Poorly planned lighting : a single light source illuminating only one of the two paintings unbalances the entire composition, especially in the Acrylic Glass finish, which is more sensitive to reflections.
Check the formats available on each painting's product page before composing your pair: some models exist in landscape (120x70 cm and above), others in square (100x100 cm) or panoramic (120x40 cm). Mixing these format families requires a more trained eye.

Can you pair an orca painting and a whale painting of different sizes?
It is possible, but risky.
It depends on those few centimeters of spacing, on this height calculated rather than estimated, on this proportion respected relative to the sofa or the bed. It is a technical detail, but it is what makes the difference between a wall that works and a wall that leaves doubt.
To compose your own marine pair, the orca painting collection brings together the visuals best suited to this exercise in wall symmetry.
