The visual

Two cornflowers occupy most of the composition, their tattered petals spreading out in wide fans. The deep blue dominates, enhanced with touches of lavender violet and almost translucent sky blue. At the center of each flower, a dark, almost black heart creates a dense and textured anchor point. The background, treated in a range of ivory and pale green, hints at stems and a still-closed bud. The touch is free and generous, each petal seeming to have been placed with a single brushstroke. The play of light makes some points sparkle in light blue, almost white, while others plunge into dark blue. The whole evokes a spontaneous pictorial facture, close to oil painting in full paste.
